Hungarian Mathematician Guest Speaker

Today, we finished settling in to the patterns of our Budapest schedule after the return from the weekend trip to Vienna. Will decided to take a walk in the morning over to the Buda side of the city, going through the markets and buying some fruit and postcards.

In the morning class session,  class went as normal as we all learned more about number theory from Professon Hanson. Today was the birthday of Greg Fargo, and to celebrate it, some of the students bought him a gigantic loaf of bread in commemoration of all of the bread that he has eaten on this trip. (The 3-kilogram (6.6 lb.) loaf of bread only cost 370 forint (less than 2 dollars!)

In the afternoon, we had an exciting event: a guest speaker, the Hungarian mathematician Miklós Laczkovich, gave us a lecture on the Pythagorean theorem and rational solutions to it. He showed us three different ways to prove the theorem, two of which you can see in the picture below.

We came back to the hotel as normal to work on the homework. By the evening, most of the loaf of bread was completely devoured!

We went to a restaurant in the evening to celebrate Greg's birthday and got some good food. Eli got a nice plate of risotto, pictured here:
It even came with pieces of spaghetti stuck in it! How fancy!
We wish everyone back home a good evening as we wrap our day in Budapest.
Sziasztok,

Eli and Will
